She had no objections, so I got myself a pint and placed it next to
my salad bag on the other counter. I hit the head or the john as some might say,
and I had a long and satisfying session there, but we can skip those details. On my
way in, I had noticed a sign on the wall, but I didn't quite decipher it. On my
way out I stopped in front it and read it at my leisure. It said:
Alcohol - Because no great story ever started with someone eating a salad.
How ironic, I thought to myself. Here
I am, a writer with not one but two salads - what are the odds? I walked over to
the bartender and pointing at the sign, I told her: "Well, that is not going to
be true for much longer. I will write that great story. Look for it about a
month from now." My wife had opened her salad in the
meantime and the aroma was mesmerizing. I held back for a few moments and read
the recipe handout:
Mom's Secret-No-Longer Recipe
for a Really Good Potato Salad *
Vegan food
The
ingredients are fairly standard, and the quantities of each could be adjusted to taste. It's the technique that
makes it great.
Ingredients:
Celery
Green pepper
Scallions
Fresh parsley
Potatoes
Garlic cloves
Method:
Dice celery, pepper, scallions and put into a large bowl. Mince parsley and add.
Scrub potatoes with brush, cut out
eyes, and slice into 1/2-inch-thick slices. This will make sure the potatoes are
cooked evenly.
Put potatoes and garlic cloves in a
pot of water, bring to boil. Cook until done, but not overdone. A fork will go
through a slice with a tiny bit of resistance.
